Mr Andrew Ferguson

Mr Andrew Ferguson is a highly expereinced instructor and workshop facilitator, with significant experience in Integrated Logistics  Support and Asset Management. Holding an MBA, BEng, CPEng and CPLog, Andrew has wide experience in defence and civil industry engineering, logistics support analysis, through life support and asset management across many technology and industry sectors. These include aerospace, mining and resources industry, utilities (electrical and water), services, maritime platforms and systems (surface and submarine), military vehicles, electronics, radar, computing systems, surveillance, water treatment and desalinisation systems.

Andrews depth of experience working across a range of industries and technologies allows him to teach his classes with real-world context, arming students with the practical skills and knowledge that can be applied upon completion of the course.

 

Patrick Bridge

Patrick Bridge is a Qualified Test Pilot with 4500 hours flight experience on over 50 aircraft types.

On graduation from Adelaide University with a Bachelor of Science Patrick joined the Australian Army to commence a flying career. Whilst in the Army he flew Kiowa, Huey, Black Hawk and Tiger helicopters.  In 2006 he underwent test pilot training at Empire Test Pilots’ School, United Kingdom and for nine years worked as an experimental test pilot at the RAAF’s Aircraft Research and Development Unit (ARDU).

During his time at ARDU, Patrick conducted a wide variety of rotary and fixed wing flight testing, including performance, handling qualities and systems assessments. Patrick holds an Airline Transport Pilot Licence and a current Flight Instructor Rating.

 

Mr Bob Gilliver

Bob Gilliver BCom MBA is CEO of MBA Quality Consultants, an Advisory Organisation which assists Business Schools around the world in seeking accreditations for their MBA Programs.

After a 30 year career in business, at very senior levels for organisations such as Amcor and CUB and then in the Merchant Banking industry Bob switched to Academia where he was MBA Director of Programs operating in Singapore, Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and at two South Australian Universities as well as being an adjunct Professor teaching on those MBA Programs and Chair of the European Summer School of Advanced Management.

He is a highly experienced Business Manager, Lecturer and Trainer of Managers in business organisations.

Dr Benjamin Brooks

Dr Benjamin Brooks is a Human Factors researcher at the Australian Maritime College.  Ben wrote his PhD on the development of safety culture in small commercial ships, he has been a Safety Manager in a large high risk organisation. Ben spends most of his time designing and developing training systems, technology, policies, and procedures to improve safety management systems and individual human performance in ports, shipping companies, emergency management agencies and land-based industries.

 

 

 

Mr Gavin Walker

Gavin is an industry leader in the field of MSG-3 and Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM). His knowledge is based on a diverse professional background in military (Royal Air Force) and civilian aerospace where he has worked in a number of technician and engineering management roles. The diversity of his background allows him to provide relevant context to managerial and practical issues relating to MSG to a wide audience.

 

Gavin has complementary skill and experience in Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) and Logistic Support Analysis (LSA) Management within air and ground environments (military and civil) which included the application of Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (FMEA), Failure Modes, Effects & Criticality Analysis (FMECA) and Maintenance Task Analysis (MTA). He is conversant with a wide range of standards which include ASD S1000D, S2000M, MSG-3, JAP100C-22, JAP100C-20, Def Stan 00-60, Def Stan 00-45, Mil Std 1843, 1629A and 1388-2B.

 

Gavin is an experienced trainer and has delivered MSG-3 training to government and commercial customers across the globe including Europe and the US.

 

Mr Fatih Ozavci

 

 

 

  

 

Fatih Ozavci is a Managing Consultant with Context Information Security and the author of the Viproy VoIP Pen-Test Kit, Viproxy MITM analyser and the VoIP Wars research series. He has fifteen years extensive experience in the field of information security as a leading security consultant, researcher and instructor.

His current research is focused on securing IMS and UC services, IPTV systems, mobile applications, mobility security testing, hardware hacking and BYOD/MDM analysis. He has discovered previously unknown (zero-day) security vulnerabilities and design flaws in IMS, Unified Communications, Embedded Devices, MDM, Mobility and SAP integrated environments and has published several security advisories for SAP Netweaver, Clicksoft Mobile, Cisco CUCM/CUCDM and Microsoft Skype for Business platforms.

Fatih has previously presented at major security conferences such as Blackhat Europe’15, HITB Singapore 2015, BlackHat USA’14, Defcon 22 and 21, Troopers’15, Cluecon 2013 and Ruxcon 2013. He has provided VoIP and Mobility Security training at Defcon 23, AustCert 2014 and 2016, Kiwicon 2015 and Troopers’15.

 

Martin Renilson

 

Martin Renilson has been actively involved in the maritime profession for over 30 years. He established the Ship Hydrodynamics Centre at the Australian Maritime College (AMC) in 1985, and was part of the team that developed the Australian Maritime Engineering CRC in 1992, which he subsequently ran for a year. He then established the Department of Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering at AMC in 1996, which he ran until 2001.  In 2001 Dr Renilson was appointed Technical Manager, Maritime Platforms & Equipment for DERA, which later became QinetiQ. In 2007 Dr Renilson returned to Australia and set up his own company, conducting consulting for a range of clients in Australia and overseas. In 2012 Dr Renilson was appointed inaugural Dean of Maritime Programs at the Higher Colleges of Technology, United Arab Emirates, with the remit to start maritime education in the country, retiring from this position in November 2015.

 

Mr Fred Barrett

Fred Barrett graduated in 1994 from the Australian Maritime College with a degree in Naval Architecture. Fred provides undergraduate & masters students through a range of Naval Architecture & design courses. Fred has considerable design experience through his own company, supporting the design of large concrete floating structures, high performance racing yachts, composite and aluminium commecial and recreational vessels, in addition to survey inspectinos and technical design work.

 

A/Prof Jonathan Binns

A/ Professor Jonathan Richard Binns is the Associate Dean Research, Australian Maritime College and Director of the ARC Research Training Centre for Naval Design and Manufacturing,

Jonathan Binns has trained and worked as a design and research engineer specialising in analysis of fluid mechanics by theoretical and experimental means. His primary expertise is in a variety of model and full scale experiments as well as potential flow and finite volume flow predictions. Jonathan has experience in hydrodynamic and structural design, research, development and simulation of marine craft.

 

Dr Mark J Kiemele

  

Mark J. Kiemele, President and Co-founder of Air Academy Associates, has more than 30 years of teaching and consulting experience. Having trained, consulted, and mentored more than 30,000 leaders, scientists, engineers, managers, trainers, practitioners, and college students from more than 20 countries, he is world-renowned for his Knowledge Based KISS (Keep It Simple Statistically) approach to engaging practitioners in applying performance improvement methods.  His support is requested by an impressive list of global clients, including Sony, Microsoft, GE, Raytheon, Lockheed-Martin, Northrop-Grumman, General Dynamics, GlaxoSmithKline, Bio-Rad, Samsung, Hyundai, Kia, PerkinElmer, Danaher, John Deere, Xerox, and a host of DoD organizations. 

Mark earned a B.S. and M.S. in Mathematics from North Dakota State University and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Texas A&M University. During his time in the USAF, Mark supported the design, development and testing of various systems, including the Maverick and Cruise Missile systems. He performed the first aircraft/missile safe escape analysis on the Maverick, determining optimum escape maneuvers to minimize risk to the launch aircraft and pilot. He was a software engineer responsible for the design and development of the terrain following guidance system of the Cruise Missile. Mark was also a professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy.  Mark currently serves on the National Defense Industrial Association’s Test & Evaluation Executive Committee; and he teaches Scientific Test and Analysis Techniques (STAT) and Combinatorial Test Design courses for the International Test & Evaluation Association and many other test organizations.    

In addition to many published technical papers, he has co-authored the books Basic Statistics: Tools for Continuous Improvement; Knowledge Based Management (KBM); Applied Modeling and Simulation: an Integrated Approach to Development and Operation; Network Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis; Lean Six Sigma: A Tools Guide; Design for Six Sigma:  The Tool Guide for Practitioners, and most recently, Reversing the Culture of Waste: 50 Best Practices for Achieving Process Excellence.  He is also the editor of the text Understanding Industrial Designed Experiments.

Mr David L Adamy

 

Mr. Dave Adamy holds BSEE and MSEE degrees, both with communication theory majors. He has over 40 years experience as an engineer and manager in the development of electronic warfare and related systems. He has published over 150 articles on electronic warfare and communications theory related subjects, including a popular monthly tutorial section in the Journal of Electronic Defense. He has ten books in print. He consults to various military organizations and teaches electronic warfare and communication theory short courses
all over the world.

Dr Edwin V. Bonilla

Dr Edwin Bonilla is a researcher at NICTA's (National ICT Australia) Machine Learning group and an adjunct research fellow to the school of Computer Science at the Australian National University (ANU). His research interests include probabilistic graphical models, Bayesian statistics, Gaussian processes, transfer learning and applications of machine learning in computer systems, document analysis, computer vision and activity recognition from wearable sensors. Before joining NICTA, he did his PhD and worked as a post-doctoral researcher at The University of Edinburgh.

Dr Neil Davidson

Dr Neil Davidson began his career in theoretical particle physics, working on the modelling and analysis of heavy ion collision experimental data. After working for several years in quantum many-body theory, he changed direction and, after qualifying in engineering management, worked in the area quality management systems as a trainer, auditor and program manager. Following a move to Adelaide at the end of 1999, he joined Motorola Inc as a metrics and measurement specialist, rising to the position of Principal Staff Engineer with responsibility for measurement programs across the globally distributed, 6000-strong Motorola Global Software Group.

Neil joined the University of South Australia’s Centre of Excellence in Defence and Industry Systems Capability (now part of the Defence and Systems Institute) in June 2006, where he has led the systems engineering program. He has published over 50 papers in journals and conference proceedings, spanning both basic science research and applied engineering practice.

Mr Andrew Dempster

Professor Andrew Dempster is Director of the Australian Centre for Space Engineering Research (ACSER) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). He is also Director of Research in the School of Surveying and Spatial Information Systems and Director of Postgraduate Research in the Faculty of Engineering. He has a BE and MEngSc from UNSW and a PhD from the University of Cambridge in efficient circuits for signal processing arithmetic. His GPS experience extends back more than 20 years. He was system engineer and project manager for the first GPS receiver developed in Australia in the late 80s, a receiver that led the world in reacquisition speed for four years. He has run more than forty GPS courses for universities and industry. His current research interests are in satellite navigation receiver design and signal processing, areas where he has six patents, and new location technologies. He is leading the development of space engineering research at ACSER, including the development of space-based GNSS receivers.

Prof Robert Fry

Robert Fry has bachelor degrees in both computer science and electrical engineering (EE) and a Masters degree in EE from the Johns Hopkins University.  He worked at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) from 1979 until 2007 where he was Principal Professional Staff.  In July 2007, he moved to the Systems  Engineering Group in Columbia, MD where he is presently Corporate Senior Staff.   His principal job functions at both JHU/APL and SEG are system engineering as applied to the development of networked combat and weapons system.   He has extensive experience with the US Navy AEGIS combat system and the development and evolution of many missile systems including PATRIOT, THAAD, HARPOON, RAM, Tomahawk, AMRAAM, and the Standard Missile family.

Robert also performs basic research and is presently transitioning a computational theory of intelligence into a formal framework for the design and realization of cybernetic systems.  The transitioning process has been guided by the two pathfinder applications; ballistic missile defense (BMD) and neural computation.  In the latter, he has successfully applied the theory to reverse-engineer cortical neurons as found in brains.  Robert holds 5 US patents including a Photoscreener for Infants and Preschool children now in clinical trials and another in Cybernetic Systems.  He teaches graduate courses at Johns Hopkins University and various short courses in missile and combat system engineering.

Dr Rowan Gilmore

Dr Rowan Gilmore is an internationally known microwave engineer with more than thirty years experience in the telecommunications and microwave industry.  He is currently Managing Director and CEO of EM Solutions, a Brisbane-based advanced manufacturing company that designs, assembles, and tests microwave modules and systems for satellite communication terminals, and is Chairman of EMClarity, a designer and manufacturer of high speed microwave radio links and modems. He previously worked as CEO of the Australian Institute for Commercialisation, assisting with technology transfer and small high technology start up companies. His experience in Australia, the US, and Europe also encompasses senior roles with SITA-Equant, the global airline IT company; OTC/Telstra, Schlumberger, and Central Microwave.
 
He has published more than thirty articles in the field of microwave systems and circuit design, and has served on the editorial boards of the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, and of Wiley’s International Journal of RF and Microwave Computer-Aided Engineering. He has been active in the education of graduate engineers in industry, having taught courses around the world to nearly fifteen hundred practicing RF and microwave engineers for the over two decades. With Dr Les Besser, he is co-author of the widely read two volume textbook ‘Practical RF Circuit Design for Modern Wireless Systems’. He is a Chartered Engineer, Senior Member of the IEEE, and a Fellow of the Academy of Technological Scientists and Engineers. He also holds appointments as Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering, and in the School of Business, at the University of Queensland.

Prof Allen Greenwood

Allen Greenwood is Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Mississippi State University (MSU). He teaches courses and conducts research in simulation, project management, and enterprise systems engineering. His primary interest is applied OR, especially in the use of simulation modeling, analysis, and optimization—oftentimes implemented through decision-support systems—to improve the design and management of production and project systems. His professional experience spans a wide variety of domains -- engineering design and development (military aircraft and aerospace), manufacturing and production systems (military aircraft, shipbuilding, automotive, textile fibers, and electrical systems), project management, and healthcare. He has authored or co-authored over 130 creative works, including journal and conference papers, technical reports, software programs, etc. His research has appeared in such journals as Decision Sciences, European Journal of Operations Research, IEEE Transactions on Reliability, IIE Transactions, Journal of the Operational Research Society, and Naval Research Logistics. He is co-author of the textbook Applied Simulation Modeling and Analysis Using Flexsim.

Prof Fred Harris

Professor Fred Harris teaches at San Diego State University where he occupies the CUBIC Signal Processing Chair. His teaching and research areas include Digital Signal Processing, Multirate Signal Processing, Communication Systems, Source Coding and Modem Design. He has extensive practical  experience in communication systems, high performance modems, sonar and advanced radar  systems and high performance laboratory instrumentation. He holds a number of patents on MSP for  Satellite and Cable Modems and lectures throughout the world on DSP applications. He became a Fellow of the IEEE in 2003, cited for contributions of DSP to communications systems and in 2006 received the Software Defined Radio Forum's "Industry Achievement Award. He consults for organizations requiring high performance, cost effective DSP solutions and has contributed to a  number of textbooks and handbooks on various aspects of signal processing.

Dr Clayton Kerce

Dr J. Clayton Kerce is a senior scientist in the Tactical Weapons and Sensors program office in the Georgia Tech Research Institute’s Sensors and Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Georgia Tech and held a postdoctoral position at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Natural Sciences before joining the Georgia Tech Research Institute in 2001. His research interests include statistical estimation, signal processing, and scientific computation.

Prof Michael Negnevitsky

Professor Michael Negnevitsky is the Chair in Power Engineering and Computational intelligence and a Director of the Centre for Renewable Energy and Power Systems at the University of Tasmania, Australia. He is well known for his work in the field of artificial intelligence applications. Negnevitsky was an invited speaker at Hiroshima University, Japan; The Center for Adaptive Systems at Boston University, USA; Norwegian University of Science and Technology; Rochester Institute of Technology, USA; University of Colorado, USA and delivered Sir Victor Burley Lecture at the Joint Electrical Meeting (IEAust and IEE), Australia The course has been delivered at Otto-von-Guericke-Universitat, Magdeburg, Institut Elektronantriebstechnik, Magdeburg, Germany, Hiroshima University Japan, Boston University USA, and Rochester Institure of Technology, USA.
Negnevitsky has co-authored over 250 research publications including numerous journal articles. The lectures in the academy catalogue are part of Professor Negnevitsky’s recent book entitled Artificial Intelligence: A Guide to Intelligent Systems, 2nd ed., Addison-Wesley, 2005

Mr Craig Payne

Craig Payne is a retired Naval Officer specialising in surface combatant operations specifically in undersea warfare. He has a background in underwater acoustics and weapons physics. His experience includes planning and conducting underway exercises from single ship encounter exercises to large force on force interactions. Team Lead and Project Manager. Lecturer on basic naval weapons systems and electronic warfare. He has a Bachelor of Science from University of Washington,a Master of Science from US Naval Postgraduate School and a Certificate of Education from Eastern Washington University.

Craig is currently an Operations Analyst and Researcher at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL). Senior Professional Staff, Force Projection Department - Systems Engineering & Assessments Group. He is currently USW Co Chair for Integrated Warfare Systems command Aegis Capability Phasing Plan and also Study Lead - N97 Payload Study. He is also a Team Member of the Large Diameter Unmanned Underwater Vehicle Concept of Operations Working Group. Craig's Navy career spans over 25 years from Division Officer on the USS Dewey to Master Instructor and Course Coordinator in the Systems Engineering Department at the US Navy Acadamy. He teaches the Princples of Naval Weapons Course and authored the Princples of Naval Weapons text book.

Dr Branko Ristic

Branko Ristic received all degrees in electrical engineering: Ph.D. (QUT, 1995), M.Sc. (Belgrade University, 1991), and B. Eng. (University of Novi, 1984). Dr Ristic held various research/engineering positions in former Yugoslavia (until 1989) and Australia before joining the Australian Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) in 1996, where he stayed until present. During 2003/04 he spent a year in IRIDIA (Universite libre de Bruxelles, Belgium). Since 2006 he is an Honorary Fellow of The University of Melbourne. His research interests include nonlinear filtering, target tracking, sensor fusion and reasoning under uncertainty, with a particular emphasis on defence and security applications. He published over 60 journal and 100 conference papers, and was a recepient of the best-paper award on a few occasions. He co-authored a bestseller Beyond the Kalman filter (Artech House, 2004) and was the Chair of the Fourth Australian Data Fusion Symposium in 2007. In 2009 he was awarded a DSTO Fellowship.

Dr Brian Stevens

Dr Brian Stevens has 10 years of experience working for Emerson Electric and Lockheed Martin and more than 30 years of teaching experience,. At Georgia Tech  he has worked for the Research Institute for 15 years and held a joint appointment as an Associate Professor of Aerospace Engineering. His interests are in guidance, navigation, and control, (GNC) and aircraft flight dynamics and simulation. He has taught a short course in GNC at Georgia Tech, and as a contract course since 1992.  He is a co-author with Frank L. Lewis of Aircraft Control and Simulation (second edition, John Wiley, 2003).

Dr Ricardo Valerdi

Ricardo Valerdi is an Associate Professor in the Systems & Industrial Engineering Department at the University of Arizona. Previously he was a Research Associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a Visiting Associate in the Centre for Systems and Software Engineering at the University of Southern California, a Visiting Scientist at the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, and was a Visiting Fellow at the Defence & Systems Institute at the University of South Australia.

Dr. Valerdi is a recipient of the Frank Freiman Award from the International Cost Estimation and Analysis Association, a two-time recipient of the Best Thesis Advisor Award in the MIT Technology & Policy Program, the Best Article of the Year Awards in the Systems Engineering Journal and Defense Acquisition Journal, and Best Paper Awards at the Conference on Systems Engineering Research (2009 and 2013), International Society of Parametric Analysts (2005), and Conference on Predictive Models in Software Engineering (2011). He teaches courses in cost estimation and systems engineering.

His research focuses on systems engineering metrics, cost estimation, test & evaluation, human systems integration, enterprise transformation, and performance measurement. His research has been funded by Army Test & Evaluation, Navy Acquisition Research Program, Air Force Office of the Surgeon General, Air Force Acquisition Chief Process Office, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, IBM Centre for the Business of Government, the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Dr. Valerdi is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Cost Analysis and Parametrics, served on the Board of Directors of the International Council on Systems Engineering, and is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He received his B.S./B.A. in Electrical Engineering from the University of San Diego in 1999, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Systems Architecting and Engineering from the University of Southern California in 2002 and 2005. Between 1999 and 2002, he worked as a systems engineer at Motorola and has been affiliated with the Aerospace Corporation's Economic and Market Analysis Centre. He served as Program Chair of the 20th and 24th Forum on COCOMO and Software Cost Modeling.

His contributions to the field include the Constructive Systems Engineering Cost Model (COSYSMO), a model for estimating systems engineering effort, which has been calibrated with data provided by BAE Systems, Boeing, General Dynamics, L-3 Communications, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, and SAIC. He is also founder and director of the Arizona Science of Baseball.
