Systems Engineering Practice

Course Description

This course delivered by Dr Neil Davidson has been designed to introduce the foundational elements of the discipline of traditional Systems Engineering. The course will focus on the fundamental principles and concepts of systems engineering and their application to the development of complex systems. In particular it will provide you with the principles, concepts and methodologies for the development, design and management of large or highly complex technical systems, such as the development of a new aircraft or ship, a large infrastructure project, or an information system.ÂÂ It will show you that Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach that integrates the various disciplines and specialty groups into a team effort forming a structured development process that proceeds from concept to design to production to operation and, in some cases, through to termination and disposal of large-scale and complex systems. It provides an overview of the systems engineering processes, and concentrates on its application to the front-end systems engineering, i.e. Needs Analysis, Conceptual System Design and Preliminary System Design, where a paper-based (abstraction) prototype of the system design is constructed and evaluated, as opposed to the construction of a physical prototype. These require high-level systems thinking and conceptualisation skills, planning and organisation, and lecturer/ instructor guidance is provided throughout the contact sessions and during the study period. The teaching in this subject is reinforced through small group exercises based upon case studies, with interaction between students encouraged through discussion of their own experience with real-world systems design and acquisition.
