Practical Machine Learning

Course Description

Practical Machine learning is concerned with making computers learn from data rather than hard coding the solution to different tasks. It has been applied successfully to long-standing problems in Artificial Intelligence and other areas where understanding and exploiting the available data is crucial.

This two-day course delivered by Dr Edwin V. Bonilla describes the fundamental principles of machine learning and aims not only at understanding the theory behind popular methods for learning from data but also at exploiting this understanding in order to use these methods in practice. The course will be divided into four theoretical sessions along with their corresponding practical sessions. It will cover fundamental concepts in machine learning (such as types of learning, data representation and generalization) and it will present the theory behind different methods for dimensionality reduction (linear and nonlinear dimensionality reduction, mixture models), regression (e.g. linear parameter models and radial basis functions), classification (e.g. logistic regression and support vector machines) and probabilistic dynamical models (Hidden Markov Models and Conditional Random Fields). The practical sessions will involve problems in computer vision, document analysis and time series prediction.

Target Audience

This course targets scientists or practitioners with a quantitative background eager to incorporate learning methods into their corresponding disciplines.

Attendants should have elementary understanding of probability theory, linear algebra and calculus and should have very basic programming skills in order to carry out the practical sessions (which will make use of Matlab).

All attendees will be required to bring a laptop to this course.

Course Outline

After completing the course the attendees will:

Understand the principles of machine learning, its aims and limitations.
Be able to characterize the different learning algorithms, their relationships, advantages and disadvantages when solving real life applications.
Identify problems whose solutions are amenable to machine learning techniques, provide the solution to these problems with existing algorithms and their evaluation.
