Naval Architecture for Maritime Systems

Course Description

This five day course delivered by the Australian Maritime College provides participants with comprehensive knowledge in the field of naval architecture. The course is offered with a project component based on a surface vessel or a submarine.

Successful completion of the course may qualify the candidate for a unit of credit (JEE 504 - Principles of Naval Architecture) with the Australian Maritime College in the following areas of post-graduate study: Master of Applied Science, Master of Business Administration, Master of Engineering.

Target Audience

Understanding naval architecture is essential for those working in maritme engineering programs, regardless of whether you are supporting the design and delivery of the platform or its associated combat system.

Upon completion of the course, students will be armed with the requisite knowledge to understand the factors that influence the performance and integrity of a ship or submarines whilst at sea. Students will return to their workplace capable of making informed decisions in their specialist domain in the context of the host platform.

Candidates should note that this is an intensive course and will require after-hours effort to successfully meet the assessment criteria.

Course Outline

The course will cover the following modules:

Hull type and form

Hull geometry

Mass tracking

Elements of transverse stability

Analysis of transverse stability


Dry docking

Global structure

Local structure

Marine regulatory environment

Graphical documentation

Design process.

The course will be delivered by classroom theory sessions and incorporates a project assessment which must be completed within 6 weeks.

Academic Recognition

Successful completion of the full program may qualify the candidate for an exemption in JEE 504 – Principles of Naval Architecture, for the Australian Maritime College Post Graduate study areas of Master of Applied Science, Master of Business Administration, Master of Engineering.
