Guidance, Navigation & Control

Course Description

This 5 day course, presented by Dr Brian Stevens and Dr Clayton Kerce provides comprehensive training in Guidance, Navigation & Control. Starting with principles of operations, the basics of GNC are described in a practical context helping students contextualise system behaviour. As the course progresses, this foundation is built upon with more detailed explanations of GNC use in actual systems.

Target Audience

The course is suited for both the newcomer who seeks knowledge in GNC systems and those with experience in the field requiring a refresher and updates on contemporary GNC techniques. Students should have a mathematical background in Differential Equations, simple manipulation of Vectors and Matrices, and Laplace Transforms at the level of first degree in Engineering or Physics. A brief background will be covered where necessary.

Course Outline

Vehicle Kinematics

Vector notation, Coordinate rotations. Equations for Angular Motion and Translation (with examples).
GNC Introduction Motivation Quaternions Poisson Quaternion ODEs Attitude Control example.

Vehicle Dynamics / Analysis Simulation of Rigid-Body Motion

Equations of motion. Free and forced motion. Gyroscopic effects; Precession; Spin-Stabilization.
Aerodynamic force and moment models Rotational Translational state eqns.
Aerodynamics. Example: High-fidelity 6-DoF Simulation of Artillery Round and illustration of Precession

Filtering Estimation Algorithms

Summary of Probability Random Processes Noise in sensors (and its effect) Covariance Analysis
Principles of Estimation Theory
Filters: Kalman (linearized, extended, divergence, factorization, bias), Alpha-beta filters, Polynomial filters
Choice of variables Tracking.


The Earth's shape and gravity The WGS-84 Spheroid Earth-related coordinate systems.


Mapping, and distance calculations Position fixing Astro-Navigation Attitude from star-sights.

Radio Navigation

Range Bearing and Positions Fixing Systems The Global-Positioning System (GPS)

Inertial Sensors and Navigation

History, implementation, and equations of platform and strapdown INS
Description, theory, and error sources of Gyros and Accelerometers (mechanical through optical types)
Accelerometers and Specific Force Simulation and error behaviour
Aided Inertial Navigation, Transfer Alignment System Block Diagram equations

GNC Control Methods

Transform and State-Space formulations Control of gimbals Tracking control Velocity feedforward
Application of optimal and nonlinear control Equilibrium and Linearization Aircraft Control.

Guidance Analysis & Design
