Engineering Aspects of GPS

Course Description

This 4-day course is A two-day course delivered by Prof Andrew Dempster covers the basics of the Global Positioning System (GPS), suitable for the novice as well as professionals that deal with GPS technology on a daily basis. Particular attention will be given to the fundamentals of GPS signals, measurement data processing, hardware, and augmentations.

The course will cover current and future GPS signals and measurements, satellite constellation, positioning principles, coordinates and reference systems, measurement errors and biases, data processing strategies, accuracy and quality control issues, high precision techniques such as DGPS and baseline determination using carrier phase, receiver hardware components and interfacing to other devices, introduction to Galileo, Glonass, Beidou, QZSS, IRSS and the impacts of having multiple GNSS systems, current and future applications.

We will interactively simulate a double super-heterodyne, dual-band radio receiver, as well as multiplecomponents. This provides the opportunity to explore ‘what if?’ scenarios. based on the newly published book, Electronic Warfare in the New Threat Environment (Artech House, January 2015). Recent threat system development has delivered increased lethal ranges, reduced response times, new waveforms, jamming cancellers and sophisticated seeker head technology that have reduced or negated defensive approaches used successfully for decades. In response to this the course will focus on emergent requirements for Electronic Warfare Systems from an equipment and tactics perspective as demanded by the new threat environment.
